With more than 18,600 students and 2,500 faculty and staff, University of North Carolina Greensboro (UNCG) is the largest state university in the Piedmont Triad (Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point). UNCG is situated on 210 picturesque acres and includes 30 academic buildings and 24 residence halls
Challenge
UNCG was committed to reducing water and energy consumption and operational efficiencies as part of its conservation commitment and cost reduction efforts However, aging equipment and obsolete building systems were hampering their efforts, leading to increased use and costs, and negatively impacting comfort.
Solution
UNCG partnered with Brady to become the first campus in the UNC system to use performance contracting to self-fund the replacement and upgrade of equipment and systems. Specific enhancements included:
• Retrofit to DDC controls
• Chiller plant optimization
• New chiller systems
• New VAV boxes
• New air handlers
• Lighting retrofit
• Variable frequency drive installation
• Water conservation measures
• Service and training
The Outcome
The highly successful project resulted in significant use and cost savings in energy, operations and water. In addition, the learning and living environments have been enhanced through improved comfort and indoor air quality, along with brighter classrooms and hallways.
